The Revive Eco Story
From University Project to Sustainable Innovation
Born from a simple university project that transformed into a mission to create a more sustainable world. Discover the Revive Eco story and the progress we have made over the years.
Back in 2012, when Fergus Moore and Scott Kennedy were studying entrepreneurship at the University of Strathclyde, they received an assignment to develop a business idea that would ultimately create a positive social or environmental impact.
Drawing from their experiences in hospitality, they decided to tackle the problem of food waste, leading to the foundation of Revive Eco. Their journey began with a vision for sustainable innovation in waste management—a vision that continues to drive them today.

The Spark: A Coffee Waste Solution
While working in coffee shops, Fergus and Scott noticed a recurring trend: customers often asked to take spent coffee grounds home for their gardens and compost heaps.
This consistent request, in turn, sparked an idea—what if, instead of being discarded, used coffee grounds could be repurposed on a commercial scale?
Their initial concept was straightforward—collect spent coffee grounds from local coffee shops and restaurants, enrich them with nutrients, and create an eco-friendly soil enhancer.
This innovative idea resonated strongly with the university, leading them to pitch at an international business plan competition in Texas.
Competing against top universities worldwide, they won an award for groundbreaking innovation, an achievement that fueled their entrepreneurial spirit.
The Birth of Revive Eco
After graduating, Fergus and Scott took a leap of faith, transforming their university project into a full-fledged business. As a result, Revive Eco was born in 2015. The name Revive Eco was chosen to reflect their mission—bringing new life to materials traditionally viewed as waste.
In the early years, the company focused on producing soil conditioner from spent coffee grounds. However, as they delved deeper, they realised they weren’t unlocking the full potential of their raw material.
A Game-Changing Discovery to the Revive Eco Story
In 2018, Revive Eco discovered that coffee grounds contain valuable oils with applications in cosmetics, food and beverage, and pharmaceuticals. This discovery marked a pivotal moment in the company’s journey.
Over the next 18 months, Fergus and Scott secured approximately £450,000 in grants and investment funding to develop a sustainable process for extracting these high-value oils. This breakthrough became the cornerstone of Revive Eco’s growth and evolution.

Scaling Up: From Concept to Industry
Today, Revive Eco has grown from a two-person startup into a dynamic team of scientists, operational experts, and sustainability advocates.
The company has developed a patented, sustainable, and scalable process for extracting coffee oil. Initially partnering with an industrial facility in France to bring this vision to life.
